Statement on Petersburg Becoming an Eligible Host City for Casino Gaming
Today, the General Assembly approved Petersburg's inclusion as an eligible host city for casino gaming, marking a significant milestone for the potential of the largest economic development and tourism project in the City’s history. This decision follows a three-year journey to allow Petersburg citizens to vote on a transformative project that will bring positive change for generations to come.
“On behalf of City Council and the City Administration, I deeply thank Senator Aird for her unwavering commitment, hard work, and dedication to Petersburg and her residents,” said Mayor Sam Parham. "This opportunity has the potential to be a game changer for our city. Senator Aird has fulfilled her promise to equip Petersburg with the needed tools to drive positive change and foster growth for future generations. The City also wants to thank Governor Youngkin for removing the re-enactment clause and the General Assembly for final approval.”
Looking ahead, Petersburg will quickly move toward preparing for a November 2024 referendum on the ballot. City Manager March Altman will spearhead the formation of a committee of city team members and community representatives to plan this significant initiative.
