Petersburg Animal Shelter Closed Due to Parvo Outbreak
The Petersburg Animal Shelter is closed for at least two weeks for an outbreak of Parvo, a highly contagious viral disease affecting dogs. The closure is effective immediately and will last until all dogs test negative for Parvo. Shelter employees are working diligently to address and mitigate the outbreak.
Parvo, known for its severe impact on the gastrointestinal system of dogs, particularly puppies, can spread rapidly in environments where animals are housed in close proximity. The decision to close the shelter was made to ensure the safety and health of the animals currently in care and to prevent the further spread of the virus.
Steps Being Taken:
· Comprehensive cleaning and disinfection of all shelter facilities and equipment.
· Quarantine and close monitoring of any dogs showing symptoms of Parvo.
· Veterinary care for affected animals.
· Temporary suspension of animal intake and adoptions until the shelter is safe.
Recommendations for Dog Owners:
· Owners are advised to ensure their dogs are up to date on Parvo vaccinations.
· Look for symptoms of Parvo in dogs, such as vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), lethargy, and loss of appetite.
· Until the outbreak is under control, avoid bringing dogs to areas where other dogs congregate, such as parks and dog runs.
· If you suspect your dog may have been exposed to Parvo, contact your veterinarian immediately.
